Step 1 FEEL

The students wanted to ensure the safety of their fellow-mates. On researching, they figured that there has been so many cases across the world where students have been dying due to vehicular heatstroke. Vehicular heatstroke occurs when a child dies due to being left – intentionally or unintentionally – in a hot car. A child's body can overheat three to five times faster than an adult's body, making them highly susceptible to the condition. On average, every 10 days a child dies from heatstroke in a vehicle. In more than half of these deaths, the caregiver forgot the child was in the car.

One day in early October, one of their team members shared an article about a 5-year-old Saudi Arabian boy who tragically passed away due to suffocation after being left on a school bus. After digging deeper into multiple recent deaths of students on similar grounds, they decided to attempt to create a solution for this problem which will have significant beneficial impacts across schools if implemented properly. They wanted to answer this question - How can we guarantee that schoolchildren reach their destination safely using the bus?

The main people affected were school-children. Their primary concern was to ensure a safer school bus ride.

Step 2 Imagine

1) Sensor System - If the ID card of a particular child hasn't been swiped, it will illuminate the sensors located at the front end of the bus and turn them red. 2) Alarm System - In case the bus driver leaves the bus when student is still in the bus, turning off the engine will lead to the beeping of the alarm attached. 3) Notification System - Within 5 minutes of the bus driver and conductor alighting from the bus, a notification shall be sent to the 10 most important school and transport personnel. 4) Real Time Tracking - The tracking method that makes use of GPS as well as logistics databases to determine the current location of a person, vehicle, or object at any moment in time is known as Real-time Tracking.

The students decided to collaborate all these different solution to formulate a 3-tier system. This will ensure maximum safety of students.

Step 3DO

Their plan was to first collaborate with the school bus service system. After which, they will implement it in their school. They would then spend 2 months in gathering opinions, receiving feedback and fixing errors.

The project was taken forward to a school event called as Innovation Mela. Many liked it and it is on its way of getting implemented.

The cost was a major factor for the students. However, with guidance and further brainstorming, they were able to resolve the issue.

Good health and well being

The project aims at ensuring the safety of students during their school bus ride. Hence, good health and well being would be the most appropriate global goal for the project as in safety of kids also come under the broader umbrella of this goal.

Step 4 SHARE

The students first presented their idea to their senior teachers. After being selected, they pitched it to the innovation team of the school, who promised to implement their idea in the school. They are now waiting for the opportunity to pitch their idea in the national platform called Dubai Next.
