Littering in the canteen

Step 1 FEEL

List the challenges or problems in your surroundings (school,neighbourhood etc.) that bothered you.

During the P4 and P5 recess, we can see pieces of tissues, plastic cover of the straw on floor and students will claim that they did not throw them on the floor and so its not theirs and they will not pick it up.

State the problem chosen to work and why.

We choose to work on making sure there are no litters on the floor in the canteen during recess because we feel that through this DFC project we can make a change in the students mindset.

Who were the people affected by the problem? What were their primary concerns?

The P4 and P5 students. There are litters in the canteen floor during recess. Nobody wants to pick the litters up.

Step 2 Imagine

List ALL the different solutions you came up with.

1.Use recycled paper to fold it into a small box (as small trash bin) and put it on each table for students to throw litters in there. 2.We will make a game booth where students can win prizes by picking up trash in the canteen, imagine the trash is a basketball and the trash bin is the basketball hoop, students will receive a stickers. If they get 10 stickers they can redeem a prize. 3.Make posters to encourage students to throw their rubbish in the trash bins and picking up litters. 4.Talk to the students during recess and ask them to pick up the litters and throw them in the trash bins. 5. During recess, we will go and open up the lid of the trash din so that students do not have to touch the lids(as they find it dirty to touch it) and we will go and close it when recess is over.

Which solution from those listed above did you choose to implement and why?

We did not choose 1. as when we try it out, the fan actually will blow the paper trash bin on the floor and it become another piece of litter. We choose 3, we make simple posters to encourage the students to throw their litters in the trash bin, we also choose 4, as prefects, its is our duty to guide the students to do the right things. Its just a simple gesture for our team, so we choose 5 too, to open and close the lid of the dustbin for our fellow schoolmates. We make some changes to solutions 2 due to the SMMs measure and adapt it too.

Step 3DO

Describe very briefly the process of implementing your solution(s).

We make our posters and paste it near the dustbin and around the canteen. We open the dustbin lid and "set up" the dustbin, put the basketball hoop on the lid. We go around the canteen to tell students to keep the canteen clean and tell them to throw their rubbish into the dustbin. Tell them about the basketball hoop and they can have fun throwing their rubbish.

What was the result or impact of your project?

During recess, the canteen has less litters on the floor. The students have fun throwing their rubbish into the trash bin. They trash bin is "open" so its easier and cleaner(as they don't have to touch the trashbin lid) for them to throw their rubbish, so they are more willing to throw away their litters in the bins.

What challenges did you encounter while implementing your project, and how did you overcome them?

Challenges: 1.Not able to meet on friday after school as planned due to the current COVID situation. The friday afternoon training are all cancelled. 2.Difficult to meet online as a full team, as everyone has a different schedule. 3.Due to SMMs we unable to carry out our project exactly as how we planned to do. How we overcome: 1.Meet during recess, short meeting (5 mis), as we still need to eat and do our prefect duty. 2.Make changes to our project to meet the SMM criteria. 3.Change our mindset, be more flexible and understanding as now there are many restrictions, we do our best and do whatever we can.

Please explain briefly why do you think so?

We talk to the students about not littering and encourage them to pick up the litters if they see any. We make throwing litters into a fun game as we want the students to be self discipline. Not littering or throwing rubbish in the trash bin or picking up litters is a habit the students should have. We don't need rules to tell the students not to litter but to educate and make them aware that, not littering or throwing rubbish in the trash bin or picking up litters is the right thing to do and they should do it.

Step 4 SHARE

How did you share your project with your school and community? Who did you share your project with? What was their response?

1. Through the pre morning assembly. The form teachers in every class played the power point slides in class and all students know there is such as problem in school. The students like the ideas as we are bringing positive changes to the school. 2.Through daily contact with classmates and schoolmates. They like the idea of having fun throwing trash and at the same time keep the canteen clean. 3.Share it with my family members, letting them know the project we are doing in school. They are proud of us as we are able to identify a problem and trying to solve it. 4.We send email to our p4 and p5 and make them aware of the current situation.

Briefly share your plan to sustain the impact of your project?

The posters will be there in the canteen. Every recess to open the lid of the trash bin and close it when recess end. Keep the basketball hoop at the trash bin.
