Step 1 FEEL

The problems chosen to work are: • Commercial Fishing • Bio-Piracy and Smuggling • Poaching • Logging Reason : Out of the 8 listed problems, the above 4 problems are caused due to illegal activity. Whereas the rest 5 problems are legal contributors to the destruction of rainforests. This is to be meant that the 4 chosen problems can, in most cases, be overcome by common people’s initiative. But the rest 5 problems can only be overcome by the government’s initiative.

Step 2 IMAGINE

I came up with the following ideas : • We can fix CCTV cameras on the treetops, so as to capture everything that happens below in the rainforests. By this we can capture illegal woodcutters, hunters or fishermen cutting trees, hunting animals or fishing respectively. • We can use drones as the watchman of the rainforests. They too can keep an eye for illegal woodcutters, hunters and fishermen. • We can plant stinky plants around the trees, so that people won’t go near the trees to do any illegal activity. • We can affix CCTV cameras on the tree tops, but here’s the twist - the cameras would be disguised as birds. 2) The following solution was finally chosen : We can affix CCTV cameras on the tree tops, but here’s the twist - the cameras would be disguised as birds. Reason : • The first solution was good as long as the weather there is stable and there is no disturbance around the cameras. But this wasn't the case with the rainforests. • The second solution was good as long as the drones remain in one position untouched. But this can’t be possible in the rainforests. The drones remaining in one position would consume a lot of energy. Besides, they won't be untouched (there are thunderstorms and rainfall often in rainforests which won't suit the drones). • The third solution was good as long as ‘protecting trees’ is our only aim. The flaw in this solution was that we need to protect the wildlife there too along with the trees, as ‘rainforests' doesn't only mean to protect the trees, it also means to protect the wildlife. If the stinky smells reaches the animals, they might get affected by it. • The fourth solution seems to be good in all terms as : - It will sustain no matter the weather is good or not. - There would be no other birds disturbing the cameras (disguised as birds) – why would any bird want to trouble some other bird. - This will not only protect the trees but also the wildlife. It will catch those illegal woodcutters, hunters and fishermen.

Step 3DO

The process of implementing my solution is as follows : • Firstly, make models of owls and bald eagles. These models should be exactly like the real owls and bald eagles in every aspect (for example – appearance, texture, etc.). Owls and bald eagles are the only 2 birds chosen as - these are the only birds who other birds and animals are afraid of. And so, other birds and animals will avoid going near these models (which will ultimately help in “no disturbance” policy of the models). • Secondly, insert the main (mini) camera inside the model in such a way that the camera seems to be the eye of the bird. • Next, take the glass lens (of the camera) of the same size as that of the camera. • Attach artificial eyelashes to these glass lenses, and then fix this to the model’s eyes. • Whenever there is rain, the bird would be made to blink there eyes through the 'control room’ (the room where the model’s/robot’s activity is supervised), which would prevent the rain from entering the bird’s eyes. • Then, contact the officers who are in charge of protecting the rainforests. Tell them about the idea and wait for their approval. • Then, at last, affix these models on tree tops where there is shade. • Afterwards, connect these models to network near the nearest office building. • Finally, warn people about this new installation in the rainforests named as “Upar Wala Dekh Raha Hai”. People will automatically start disciplining themselves.

This project hasn’t been completely implemented yet. A fake model is ready, a perfect final model is yet to make. BUT – I told this idea to my mum and dad, they really liked it. I also shared it with my neighbours, not only did they admire it but they also seemed to be moved. My teacher approved of the idea too. The people with whom I shared this idea, appreciated it and also realized the importance of the matter.

If implemented the project will impact all the indigenous people of the forest. When people themselves start getting alert after the “Upar Wala Dekh Raha Hai” idea, they would stop ruining the rainforests and to continue this we would do more accomplishing activities like : - Hold campaigns - Plant end number of trees - Spread awareness through posters - Invent more ways to save the rainforests

The challenges faced while implementing my project are (‘are' because I’m still implementing) : • I was able to make a duplicate clay model of the real model, but the resources (like the camera and glass lenses) required to make the real model are difficult to get. • Furthermore, it is also difficult to know who are the people in charge of protecting the rainforests and contact them (so as to get their approval). • Find a suitable ‘control room’ where the network can be connected and the bird’s blinking activity can be controlled.

Step 4 SHARE

I shared the project with my school, society, neighbours, relatives and friends. I told this idea to my mum and dad, they really liked it. I also shared it with my neighbours, not only did they admire it but they also seemed to be moved. My teacher approved of the idea too. The people with whom I shared this idea, appreciated it and also realized the importance of the matter. My neighbours : - “It is really good that the young generation is taking a step and raising their voice on worthy matters. And this idea is truly awesome. It is a good solution to most of the rainforest-related problems.” - “Your idea is very well designed. It will overcome the problem pretty convincingly. And I also think that ‘cameras’ is the best option, because if people aren’t willing to discipline themselves then someone else will have to force them discipline themselves. Now I am ashamed that I neither did anything nor cared for issues as big as these.”
