Step 1 FEEL

Being on camera Performing in front of the School Our time on the project Performing in front of peers

We chose bullying because it’s common around the world and we need to stop it. It seemed to us that bullying was also an issue at our school

We all were affected by this problem at some point in our school life Our concerns are that our feelings were affected in a bad way and bullies used physical contact on us and even name calling.

Step 2 IMAGINE

We came up with a Bullying Jingle. We made posters and got assistance from Teaching Assistants to have Anti-Bullying slogans displayed throughout the school. Crazy hats/socks for anti-bullying week was held with all of the Primary students (Hats off to Kindness-Help stop Bullying) (Crazy socks were to help Put a Sock on Bullying) Performed for years 1-6 assembles letting them know of how we CAN make a CHANGE one person at a time

We did all of them, we chose them because they were most effective and there was variety Because we wanted to reach all the year groups at our school

Step 3DO

When we met as a team or mentor Ms Cotter suggested we come up with topics for Design for Change. Well she told us about it as part of our ECA (Extra Curricular Activites) and then asked us to vote on topics of choice. Two stood out. Bullying and Discrimination as well as another one done with another mentor, Animal Abuse. We then met once sometimes, twice a week to target how we would make the Newton International School Lagoon Campus, Primary Department and Early Years, aware of Design for Change and Our topic “Bullying Prevention” Once we got our ideas together we worked on Posters, Put together a Jingle and had a an entire week in January dedicated to Anti Bullying (it involved all teachers having lesson plans to address bullying as well as our Favourite CRAZY HATS and CRAZY SOCKS day). Teachers and students were all in support. We loved that the whole school got involved.

Because of the project more students became aware of bullying, they knew what to look for and who to go to. Students now know how to act if they see bullying or if they themselves are being bullied.

1200

They liked the song “Don’t Be a Bully” They thought it was catchy and cool - “Bullying is CRA CRA 😊” They trust the adults more than they did before seeing now that they know what to look for in a BULLY “Feel better telling a trusted adult if I’m being bullied or see bullying”

We had to make sure that the song made sense. That it got the message across without being forgotten. We were unsure if people would like our song or not. Having to edit our final video multiple times. Some of the bloopers were kept and the final videos along with pictures, were put together. It was tough, took a lot of time, but we managed with the help of our mentor

MORE THAN 30 DAYS

Reduced inequalities

Because we wanted everyone to know no matter where they came from they should all be treated equally and with kindness. That bullying makes us feel unloved and like outcast, Because of Bullying, you feel out of place. That Bullying has no place in our school and society.

Step 4 SHARE

As the JIngle was performed during assemblies, our mentor Ms Cotter recorded it and edited it. Then we made a ToonTastic video of our own with our mentor’s support. Pictures and videos taken during all phases of the implementation was compiled into a video and all shared on our school Parent’s Portal. It will continue to remain there for all to see and continue to learn and know about bullying.

More than 100

Many of our friends wanted to be a part of the Design for Change initiative by the time we were in the second term of the academic year. They loved the CRAZY HATS and SOCKS and want to see it again next year. We are hoping to have guest speakers as well as Anti Bullying Buttons out to all the students and persons in our communities to draw further awareness. Bullying is a real problem and WE CAN HELP CHANGE this ONE FRIEND AT A TIME.
