Step 1 FEEL

When we met as a group, we thought about the typhoons that affect the Philippines and the people’s houses that get damaged. We also talked about how many children and adults died because of the typhoons. We discovered that people’s lives were massively affected. For example, schools were damaged. We wanted to do as much as we could to help this country.

We chose to work on raising money and awareness because we have many staff in our school who are from the Philippines so it was something we wanted to raise awareness of and show support.

Those living in the areas where typhoons have it. They are having to re-build their homes, communities and lives. It affects different families, business and lots of charities get involved to support in many different ways.

Step 2 IMAGINE

1. Holding a school fayre 2. Bake sale 3. Crazy Shirt Day 4. Wacky Hair Day 5. English lessons to be based on the Philippines. 6. Teaching assistants from the Philippines to talk about it within class.

We combined most of our suggestions and carried out a Wacky Hair Day and Crazy shirt day to raise money. We also asked our Teaching Assistants to speak in classes about the issues, using a powerpoint we had created to share the reasons why we were raising awareness and money. We informed parents of the school and in the community of the aim of our projects and used assembly time to raise awareness and celebrate our successful fundraising events.

Step 3DO

We selected the following activities to do: 1. Crazy Shirt Day 2. Wacky Hair Day 3. English lessons to be based on the Philippines. We wanted to raise as much money as possible for this cause. Children had to pay 10 QAR to wear a crazy shirt or have a wacky hair style. Additionally, some classes wrote about the devastation in their English ‘Big Writes.’

Over the two different fundraising activities the school raised 17,743 QAR. Most children participated and understood why they were completing it. More money was raised at our first event, however there was great participation across both days.

1500

I have shared many different fact with the children and from this they had lots of questions about life in the Philippines and the typhoon. It was good to see that they showed empathy with what I told them- Teaching Assistant in our school. I have learnt a lot about the Philippines and the typhoon from my English topic on the Philippines; assemblies in school and the crazy shirt day that I loved. It is sad to know people don't have the things we do so it was good to help them out- Year 5 student in school.

We had to organise the different events and ensure we planned ahead to make sure the parents and community were informed of what we were hoping to do and why.

MORE THAN 30 DAYS

No poverty

We have offered financial support to the issues that are faced in the Philippines.

Step 4 SHARE

We shared our project with the school children and their families. They all showed great support for the cause and joined in with our efforts by donating money towards the events that we carried out. The children were upset and shocked to learn about the devastation in the Philippines and it was a big learning point to understand what had happened and develop empathy.

More than 100

We aim to do regular fundraising events to encourage and develop empathy amongst our school community. We hope to share a supportive nature within the staff, families and community of our school.
