Step 1 FEEL

Students of grade 7 came up with following problems which they found around them, like: bank robbery, inflation, political issues, load shedding and pollution etc.

The students considered multiple problems but ultimately chose to focus on addressing the garbage issue in their environment. Students select this problem because they thought streets look dirty, garbage smell brother them a lot. The garbage attracts pests like flies and mosquitoes and they are harmful for human health.

Students discussed that their families and friends were affected by this problem. The people living near the railway tracks were most affected, as waste is often dumped in these areas. Additionally, garbage truck drivers who collect this trash, as well as animals and plants harmed by the trash and pollution, were also impacted. The primary concerns were: They worry about the risk of illness from playing near the garbage, fearing that it could lead to infections or other health issues. Students are disturbed by the sight of trash everywhere and desire a clean and pleasant environment both at home and in their community. They want to enjoy outdoor activities without being subjected to unpleasant odors from the garbage, which detracts from their quality of life and enjoyment of their surroundings.

Step 2 IMAGINE

Students gave many solutions such as: Recycling waste material. Always throw trash properly in trash bins instead of littering here and there. Give awareness to people about keeping their surroundings clean. Always use paper bags instead of polythene bags.

From the listed solutions, they decided to raise awareness among their peers and community and create recycled items from waste materials.

Step 3DO

The implementation process involves children designing posters with messages about waste management and prevention, gathering materials, creating the posters and charts, and displaying them in key locations at school and in the community. They also organize activities to raise awareness and encourage action. . They recycled some materials and turned them into useful objects, such as a pencil holder made from an empty tissue roll. They used old plastic bottles and containers as plant pots and grew plants in them. They expressed their ideas with the help of posters and charts. Some of them made dustbins with recycled materials and tried to raise awareness that dry and wet trash should be disposed of separately.

The project increased awareness among students about the importance of recycling and proper waste disposal. By discussing and creating educational materials like posters and charts, students learned and taught others about how to recycle things. The students applied their learning by creating useful items from recycled materials, demonstrating how waste can be repurposed. This hands-on experience reinforced the value of recycling. Their efforts in making dustbins and promoting separate disposal of dry and wet trash contributed to better waste management in their surroundings. The students' efforts likely inspired others in their community to adopt similar practices. Their awareness campaigns and creative projects had the potential to influence peers, teachers, and even family members to be more mindful of waste and recycling.

The effort of the students appreciated by the peers and teachers. "The dustbins made by the class 7th are beautiful and useful. I didn't know about the benefits of separating wet and dry garbage, but after their presentations, Now I understand how to use these dustbins properly." “The items made from waste materials are beautiful and highly useful. Their work is truly commendable and showcases the creativity of young minds.”

Initially, some students were unsure how to create items from waste materials. Collecting sufficient recyclable materials and finding the appropriate tools was also challenging. Additionally, working in groups presented coordination difficulties, as students had different ideas and approaches. They took time to think about the projects they want to made from waste material.

MORE THAN 30 DAYS

Good health and well being

We implemented this project to address the growing problem of garbage in our surroundings. By educating students and the community about proper waste management and recycling, we aim to reduce environmental pollution, improve public health, and enhance the aesthetic quality of our environment. Additionally, this project fosters creativity, responsibility, and teamwork among students, empowering them to take proactive steps toward sustainability and community improvement.

Step 4 SHARE

Students presented their recycled objects to other teachers and students in the school and briefly described them about reusing the materials and saving the environment. They also gave small presentations on 3Rs... Reduce- Reuse- Recycle. They pasted awareness artworks and posters around the school. They also placed dustbins in the class rooms and encouraged students to dispose trash properly separating the dry trash from wet trash. They gave them awareness of recycling and told them about importance of cleanliness. They initiated the idea of self-responsibility by cleaning their own class room and make other students realize to keep their surroundings clean and neat to avoid any health issue.

To sustain the impact of our project, we plan to: - Educate students about recycling and proper waste management through regular workshops, seminars, and updated educational materials, encouraging ongoing participation in waste segregation and recycling. - Engage parents and the wider community through awareness campaigns, clean-up drives, and collaborative recycling efforts, extending the project's impact beyond the school. - Continue to recognize and reward students and groups that actively contribute in this campaign
