Step 1 FEEL

The issues we discussed were…Racism, Bullying, Discrimination, Asian Stereotyping.

The issue we chose to address was…Asian Stereotyping. This is defined as…Common discrimination and stereotyping against Asians. We chose this issue because we have faced it a few times in our lives. We could relate to it and we want to bring focus towards it. We chose this issue because it made us feel sad, depressed and want to be different. We chose this issue because Asian stereotyping has become so common and is extremely normalized. It takes the form of microaggressions that are often overlooked

The people affected are people who are living in western countries but they have come from Asian countries or people with Asian ethnicity living in western societies. Their concerns were that Asian stereotyping has become so common and is extremely normalized. It takes the form of microaggressions that are often overlooked.

Step 2 Imagine

We had many ideas and discussed doing a comic strip, mosaic, painting or a graphic novel.

We chose to do a comic strip because it would grab everyone’s attention, display our problem and using humor we can address our problem in a not so serious way. We envisioned that when the audience hears our completed comic strip they will be touched by our comic strip. They will also relate to our issue and we hope that they would like to change and stop stereotyping in whatever way they can in their surroundings and in society.

Step 3DO

To create our comic strip, we came up with a comic story. We wrote dialogues for our story. We created character illustrations. We created a rough comic sketch and then we finalized the final comic strip which involves 4 different situations in the life of a girl. Our roles and responsibilities. Rian A, Rian P and Swarnika were responsible for comic story and dialogues. Aradhya, Jiana and Riya were responsible for creating comic illustrations, comic sketches and comic book cover. Nandini joined in during the ‘Do’ stage to assist with the coloring, sticking and voice acting. Our artwork is called “Another Day”. The story is about a day in the life of a girl called Swarnika.

We ourselves had many different feelings during our project. It reminded us of the times we ourselves faced some of this and, a lot of our friends in different countries who face this on a daily basis. We felt sad about it, but we also felt happy that we were doing something about it. Talking about issues affecting us made us feel sad, anxious and isolated. Creating it made us feel excited and happy. We learnt a lot during this project. We learnt to work as a team and collaborate and cooperate with each other. We respected each other’s ideas and tried to include everyone. Everyone got to choose what they wanted to do based on their strengths. We came to know of our strengths and also where we needed to improve.

The challenges we faced during our project were mainly related to execution of comic book. It was complex and labour intensive project. We have to many characters and illustrating everything in comic was very challenging. We used our superpowers of being collaborative and productive to overcome these challenges by dividing all the work and take extra work home and completing it before we meet again.

MORE THAN 30 DAYS

Good health and well being

Our project addresses SDG 3, Good Health and Wellbeing because it is helping us spread awareness about an issue which is so normalised, that it is not considered an issue at all by many. Some of the bigger issues grab a lot of attention and get a lot of action and activism, but issues like this just remain in the sidelines, even though this affects mental health and wellbeing of huge number of people.

Step 4 SHARE

The Art For Change programme included a Showcase Day on March 29th to present our projects and perform our art piece to an audience. The audience responses were amazed at the way we present this issue. Many in the audience found the issue very relatable and were impressed with our comic book.
