Step 1 FEEL

One of the main challenges in my surroundings, especially in schools, is the high amount of water being used, which leads to increased costs. This is particularly concerning in Jordan, where water is a scarce resource and considered one of the poorest countries in terms of water availability

The problem I chose to work on is the excessive use of water in schools. I chose this issue because water is a scarce resource in Jordan, and reducing its use can lower costs, save resources, and raise awareness about the importance of water conservation.

The people affected by the problem are the school owners, particularly the Finance Department, and the school management. Their primary concerns are the high cost of water bills, the wastage of a scarce and valuable resource, and the impact on the environment and future water availability in Jordan.

Step 2 IMAGINE

1. Install water-saving devices 2. Fix leaks promptly 3. Raise awareness 4. Use rainwater harvesting 5. Recycle greywater

Raise awareness is the solution that educates students and staff about the importance of saving water

Step 3DO

The solution, ‘Raise Awareness’ through Aqua Flag, is implemented by promoting water-saving practices across the school annually, educating students and staff on how to reduce water use and lower costs.

The project helped raise awareness among students and staff about the importance of saving water, leading to more responsible water use, reduced water wastage, and lower water costs for the school.

Thanks to this project, we became more aware of how much water we were wasting and learned simple ways to save it every day. I didn’t realize saving water could make such a difference. Now our school uses less water, and it also helps reduce costs!

One challenge we faced was getting everyone in the school to change their habits and consistently save water. We overcame this by organizing awareness campaigns, putting up informative posters, and encouraging friendly competitions between classes to motivate participation. Another challenge was limited resources for implementing some solutions, which we addressed by focusing on low-cost initiatives like education and simple behavioral changes.

Sustainable cities and communities

I think this worked because educating people directly changed their behavior, making them more careful with water. Simple awareness and reminders were enough to reduce wastage without needing expensive equipment.

Step 4 SHARE

During the DFC training, I identified this issue and shared my project with the school and community. I shared my project with the DFC Jordan team and representative. They showed interest in the project and offered their support.

10-20

To sustain the impact of the project, we plan to continue raising awareness annually, monitor water usage, encourage responsible habits among students and staff, and promote school-wide campaigns on water conservation all over Jordan
