Step 1 FEEL

In my surroundings, especially in my school and neighbourhood, I noticed a large amount of plastic waste being thrown carelessly. Many people use plastic bottles and covers and then discard them without proper disposal. Another major problem is the lack of awareness about recycling and reusing waste materials. Most people treat plastic as useless waste instead of seeing its potential for reuse. This leads to environmental pollution, blockage of drainage systems, and harm to plants and animals. This situation bothered me because it affects the environment and our future, and I wanted to find a way to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices.

The problem I chose to work on is the improper disposal and underutilization of plastic waste in my surroundings. Many people throw away plastic bottles and other waste materials without considering their environmental impact or potential for reuse. I chose this problem because plastic pollution is increasing rapidly and causing serious harm to the environment, including soil and water pollution. I also noticed that there is very little awareness about how waste can be reused in useful ways. By addressing this issue, I wanted to promote the idea of reducing waste and encourage people to reuse plastic materials creatively, helping to protect the environment and build a more sustainable future.

The people affected by this problem were students, residents in my neighbourhood, and the local community. Everyone is impacted because plastic waste pollutes the environment we live in. Their primary concerns included unclean surroundings, pollution of soil and water, and blockage of drainage systems due to plastic waste. Some people were also worried about the harmful effects of plastic on plants, animals, and overall health. Another major concern was the lack of awareness about proper waste management and how to reuse plastic effectively, which led to increasing waste and environmental damage.

Step 2 IMAGINE

To solve the problem of plastic waste and poor waste management, I came up with several solutions: Reusing plastic bottles to make useful items like plant pots Creating a drip irrigation system using waste bottles to save water Developing a simple rainwater harvesting model using reused materials Designing a fertilizer filtering system using plastic bottles Spreading awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution Encouraging people to follow the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Motivating students to avoid single-use plastics Conducting demonstrations to show how waste can be converted into useful products Promoting proper waste segregation (wet and dry waste) Suggesting eco-friendly alternatives to plastic

From the solutions listed, I chose to implement the reuse of plastic bottles to create useful models such as a plant pot, drip irrigation system, rainwater harvesting setup, and a fertilizer filtering system. I selected this solution because it is practical, low-cost, and easy to demonstrate. It not only reduces plastic waste but also shows people how waste materials can be converted into useful resources in daily life. By creating these working models, I was able to clearly demonstrate the importance of reuse and encourage others to adopt eco-friendly practices, making a real and visible impact in my surroundings.

Step 3DO

To implement my solution, I first collected waste plastic bottles from my surroundings and cleaned them for reuse. Then, I designed and created useful models such as a plant pot, drip irrigation system, rainwater harvesting setup, and a fertilizer filtering system using these materials. Next, I demonstrated these models to my classmates and explained how they help in reducing plastic waste and conserving resources. I also created awareness by discussing the harmful effects of plastic pollution and the importance of reuse. Finally, I encouraged others to adopt similar practices and observed their response to understand the impact of my project.

The project created a positive impact by increasing awareness about plastic waste and the importance of reuse among students and people in my surroundings. Many people understood that plastic waste can be converted into useful products instead of being thrown away. Through my models, I was able to demonstrate practical solutions for saving water and reducing waste. Some students showed interest in trying similar ideas, such as making plant pots and reusing bottles at home. Overall, the project helped change people’s thinking about waste and encouraged them to adopt simple eco-friendly practices, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

“I never knew we could turn plastic waste into something useful. This project inspired me to reuse plastic bottles at home.” – Student “The models and demonstrations made me realize how small changes in handling waste can help the environment. I will definitely practice this in my daily life.” – Teacher

While implementing my project, I faced a few challenges. Initially, some students and community members were not very interested in reusing plastic waste and were skeptical about how waste materials could be useful. Another challenge was collecting enough clean plastic bottles to make the models. It took time to gather and prepare them for reuse. To overcome these challenges, I explained the harmful effects of plastic pollution in a simple and relatable way and demonstrated practical examples of how plastic bottles could be converted into useful items like plant pots and drip irrigation systems. I also encouraged my friends and family to contribute waste bottles, which helped me complete the models successfully. Through patience, persistence, and clear demonstrations, I was able to engage people and show the value of reusing waste materials.

Good health and well being

I believe my project aligns with these global goals because it focuses on reducing plastic waste and promoting the reuse of materials, which supports Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12). By creating useful models from waste and spreading awareness, the project also encourages people to take action for a cleaner environment, contributing to Climate Action (SDG 13) and Life on Land (SDG 15). Overall, my project helps protect natural resources, reduce pollution, and promote sustainable practices, which are key objectives of these global goals.

Step 4 SHARE

I shared my project with my school by demonstrating the models I made, such as the plant pots, drip irrigation system, rainwater harvesting setup, and fertilizer filtering system. I explained to my classmates and teachers how these models reuse plastic waste and help the environment. In my community, I shared the project with friends, family, and neighbors, showing them practical ways to reuse plastic bottles and reduce waste.

To sustain the impact of my project, I plan to continue creating awareness about proper waste management and the reuse of plastic materials. I will encourage my classmates, teachers, and community members to regularly practice eco-friendly habits, such as making plant pots, using bottles for drip irrigation, and reducing single-use plastics. I also plan to organize small activities and demonstrations periodically to motivate others and ensure that these practices become a long-term habit, helping to maintain a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
